Fashion Museums to Visit After the Pandemic

SCAD Museum of Fashion and Film: Atlanta, GA

The SCAD Fashion and Film Museum, housed in Atlanta, Georgia, holds multiple exhibits showcasing the work of famous fashion designers every year. Some of their most recent designers include Guo Pei, Azzedine Alaia, Oscar de la Renta, and Carolina Herrera. They have also showcased fashion in film, with a past costume exhibit of The Handmaid’s Tale and cinematic couture exhibit with designs from films such as Titanic and Pride and Prejudice. Currently, they are showcasing Costume Designer, Ruth E. Carter’s designs from Marvel’s, Black Panther.

The Museum At FIT: New York City

New York City is the Fashion Capital of the U.S. and arguably the place where you’d go to learn all about fashion. The Museum at FIT belongs to the Fashion Institute of Technology. The FIT museum has housed designs from luxury brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Dior, and Balenciaga. While the museum is temporarily shut down due to the pandemic, they have a virtual exhibit on their site about fashion in the roaring twenties and swinging sixties. For future exhibitions, you can visit their site to see what they have planned after the pandemic is over.

Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is arguably one of the biggest museums to go to in the United States for Fashion and Art. After the Met Gala each year, the Met Museum displays the designs from the Met Gala at their costume institute. In one of their recent exhibits, Camp: Notes of Fashion, the Met Museum took designs from the 2019 Met Gala and put them on display. In their most recent exhibit at the Costume Institute, their theme was ‘In Pursuit of Fashion’ where they showcased pieces from Sandy Schreier, a fashion collector.

Musee des Arts Decoratifs: Paris, France

The Musee des Arts Decoratifs, located in Paris, France has housed the designs of Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and Christian Dior. They have also shown exhibits on films like Barbie and fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar. They also showcase exhibits on the history of fashion and different accessories.

Musee Yves Saint Laurent: Paris, France

The Musee Yves Saint Laurent Museum is located in Paris, France. They house the designs of the famous fashion designer, Yves Saint Laurent. Their current exhibit is dedicated to Fashion icon, Betty Catroux. You can view past and upcoming exhibits on their website.

The Kyoto Costume Institute: Kyoto, Japan

The Kyoto Costume Exhibit in Japan has showcased fashion designers such as Viktor and Rolf, Gucci, Prada, and Mugler. They showcase the beauty and uniqueness of Japanese fashion, with exhibits on Kimonos and textiles. They also use their exhibits to highlight Japanese Fashion Designers.
